Talk to strangers!

If you plan to carry out a project like bamboo bike construction, do not follow your mother's wisdom. Take every chance to go out and talk to strangers!

The Fumes of Absurdity, a pub in Warsaw, was full as always. The door opened suddenly and yet another ship with a merry crew on board sailed right into the port. The boys stopped as soon as they got in. They looked around, not so much eagle eyes, but still able to handle the situation. The face of Soumiya, with whom I was sailing around the city that night, appeared familiar to one of them. They had met under professional circumstances, so why not get to know each other in the fumes of absurdity? The whole group settled gently on the chairs by our table, and went on to present themselves.
“Piotr Gilarski.” The last name passed by my ears right into oblivion, just like the names of his other friends. No wonder – I have also been drifting on the waves of an ocean of blissfulness for a while. I was still able to hear the wind chanting in the shrouds, but the chorus belonged to Piotr. He kept saying it in capital letters, and it went more or less like that:
I'M NOT DRINKING ANYMORE. NOT EVEN BEER, NOT A SINGLE SIP! I DON'T WANT ANDRZEJ NOR ANYBODY ELSE TO EGG ON ME, CAUSE TOMORROW MORNING I'M HAVING A PHOTO SHOOT. NO MORE!
“A photo shoot? You're a photographer?”
“I am.”
“You know what…” And I started to tell him about my bamboo bike. He listened, asked some questions. The conversation went on, encouraging me to eventually ask him the question:
“Maybe you'd like to come one day and shoot me while I build the bike?”
“I'm pretty busy, but call me.” And I would never call him, if he hadn't repeated just before he left:
“Call me.”

So I did call him. We arranged a meeting. Piotr came. And he got hooked on it. Right next to my bamboo bike he saw handbikes built by Jarek Baranowski and his friends. Who knows, some day one of the machines might take its rider to the podium at the Olympics or in other races. Such things do happen in Carbon Bike. And Piotr is interested in literally everything. He listens to the stories told by the boys, he peeps into every corner, asks questions, and takes fantastic pictures. I hope he's also having a great time while shooting!

And I'm thinking: what would have happened if I hadn't talked to him back then? Absolutely nothing!
